Stupid Math School Math

Two cars are 750 miles apart and start moving towards each other. One car moves with the average speed of 40 mph and the other is 10 mph faster. When will the cars meet if they started to move at 11:00 a.m.?

  2. let the distance covered by the slower car be x miles
    then the distance covered by the faster car be 750-x miles

    time for slower car = x/40
    time for faster car = (750-x)/50
    aren't those times the same ???
    so ...
    x/40 = (750-x)/50
    cross-multiply and solve for x

    Once you have x, divide that x by 40 to get the time
    Add that time to 11:00 am

    HMM... I might know the answer... because I am in RSM (Russian School of Mathematics). And it is due tomorrow at 9:00 AM. (UH OH... !)

    This is problem #35, Chapter 4.

    * let the first car's speed be x miles.
    * let the second car's speed be (750-x) miles

    time for first car = x/40
    time for the second car = (750-x)/50

    Do this equation to solve for x:
    x/40 = (750-x)/50

    Use the reciprocal to help you solve this equation: "*1/x".

    x*1/40 750/50-x/50
    1/40x = 25-1/50x
    1/40x-1/50x = 25

    0.005x = 25

    Now, round up 0.005x by a whole number.

    The result would look like this: 5x=25,000

    (IT'S EASY!!!!) For x, it is 1,000.

    Now, once you found x, divide that x by 40, and then, add that time to 11:00 am.

    x = 5000

    5000/40 = 125;

    11:00 am + 12.5 hrs = 11:30 pm

    Here is the ANSWER:
    ANSWER: 11:30 pm (and that's what I think)

  10. 7:20 pm because you need to add 40 and 10 which will get the speed of the other car. 40+50=90. 750/90=8.33
    11+8=19 19-12=7
    33*60=1980
    1980/100=19.8 19.8 rounded is 20
