Ohh but in my book it says"a verb phrase always contains helping verbs,words such as is,was,has been,or might have.

I studied the link and read but I still am thinking C,I am pretty sure.

C is incorrect for your first one. In that answer choice, "was" is the main verb, not part of a verb phrase. Do you know the difference between a main verb and a helping verb?
