  1. I first read Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank shortly after it was published. I was a teenager but was amazed that she could appear so normal in the face of what she was going through. Her cheerfulness attested to the indomitable spirit of youth. Perhaps it's human to be optimistic. Certainly many of the Holocaust victims remained upbeat until near the end.

I don't have a copy of this book, so can't help you with textual evidence.

  2. 2. How does the fact that Anne sometimes gets depressed and begins to view the world as confining and unhealthy affect the way readers view her? Please include textual evidence in your answer as well as what page number you found it on.

  3. Of course she gets depressed! She can't go outside the Annex -- and cooped up in a few rooms. Again -- that is a very normal reaction. She was confined to the Annex for over two years! Ye gads!
