an ice cube, a glass of cold water, and a swimming pool are each exposed to the same amount of sunlight on a hot day. after five minutes, the ice cube is melted and the cold drink is two degrees warmer, but the temperature of the swimming pool remains unchanged. what is the best explanation for these observations?
A. the ice cube has a higher heat capacity than the glass of water and the pool
B. the ice cube has a lower heat capacity than the glass of water and the pool
C. the ice cube and the glass of water have higher heat capacities than the swimming pool
D. the ice cube and the glass

is it c

  1. C isn't right.
The best answer you have is B but I wouldn't stick my neck out until you finish the sentence for D.
Heat capacity is an extensive property which means it depends upon HOW MUCH of the material is present.
So it obviously takes more heat to raise the T of the pool by 1 degree, it takes less heat to raise the T of the 8 oz glass of H2O by 1 degree and it takes less than that to melt an ice cube. If choice D says "the ice cube and the glass of water have lower heat capacity than the pool", that would be the one to choose.

  4. I think its A because the the glass water only decreased by 2 degrees and since the pool has so much water so it takes a long time to heat up

  5. When a substance as a higher heat capacity, that means it takes longer to heat up. So for example water has a high heat capacity so lot's of water would take lots of heat to heat up the water.

  6. So I would say that its B because the ice cube and the water take less time to heat up therefor resulting in less heat capacity than the swimming pool

  7. While I see whhere everyone is coming from I think it is D. They say for THESE it's plural, A only talks about the heat capacity for the ice cube and is an incorrect statement. B only talks about the ice cube even if it is correct. C is incorrect, so D would be the correct amswer
