How can you test calcium nitride.. ( Ca3N2)

I have written the reaction between calcium and nitrogen. A question that says " how will you test the product formed " is given. SO can you please help me, How can you test calcium nitride?

Test for what? to show what?

To test calcium nitride (Ca3N2), you can perform the following test:

1. Preparation: Start by obtaining a small sample of calcium nitride (Ca3N2).

2. Reaction: Calcium nitride reacts with water (H2O) to produce calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and ammonia gas (NH3).

Ca3N2 + 6H2O → 3Ca(OH)2 + 2NH3

3. Observation: While performing the test, you should observe the following:

a. Gas evolution: Once water is added to calcium nitride, you will detect the release of a gas. This gas is ammonia (NH3), and it has a distinctive pungent smell. Therefore, you can confirm the presence of calcium nitride by the strong smell of ammonia gas.

b. Formation of precipitate: During the reaction, a precipitate called calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) will form. It appears as a white, milky suspension in water.

c. pH test: Calcium hydroxide is an alkaline compound, so you can perform a pH test. You can use litmus paper or a pH indicator solution to check if the mixture becomes more basic (alkaline) after adding water to calcium nitride.

It is important to handle ammonia gas with caution, as it is toxic and can cause irritation. Perform the test in a well-ventilated area or in a fume hood.
