In this portfolio assignment, you have chosen an event from the Civil War or pre-war era, have taken notes on this event, and now will take on a persona from the event. For example, you could choose to portray a Union soldier at Gettysburg, a plantation owner's wife during Sherman's March to the Sea, or a slave hearing about the Emancipation Proclamation. You will create a two-page narrative that demonstrates the important facts about the event through the eyes of your chosen person.

How would you like us to help you with this assignment?

Yes, I'd be glad to help, but be specific about what you need or want, please.

July 1863 - Gettysburg - Lee's army is defeated - Vicksburg falls - the Mississippi is controlled by the Union

You have to choose an event ^^^^^ from the Civil War, or an event prior to the Civil War. Assuming that you have, indeed, taken notes or read information about that event, you now choose a character - and the examples you have been given are excellent pointers - and write a two-page narrative about the event from your character's perspective.

any links or information? i need help :( @Ms. Sue

@Reed

Which event did you choose?

Which character did you choose?

July 1863 - Gettysburg - Lee's army is defeated - Vicksburg falls - the Mississippi is controlled by the Union

@Ms. Sue

What characters are there for Gettysburg?

@Ms. Sue

Soldiers -- both Union and Confederate

Nurses --

Nurses i would chose. @Ms. Sue

:-) Enjoy learning about the nurses!

Good choices. Nurses might be very interesting. Did local nurses (and doctors) treat Confederate wounded along with Union wounded, for example. Go for it!

First research the nurses. Take notes on what you learn.

Be sure to include: " the important facts about the event through the eyes of your chosen person."

You won't be ready to start your narrative until you feel you know a lot about nurses at Gettysburg.

How do i start it off? it's suppose to be in first person, as if i were there during the civil war doing the things they did. @Reed

Let me see what I can find. I'd start with Bruce Catton's books on the Civil War, but you probably don't have quick access to them. I'll be back here with what I can find to steer you to.

I think she has what she needs in the websites I posted for her.

Yes, I missed that post. :) That should do it. I entered civil war nurses and found eleven sources immediately. It's there.

huh?

you guys were super helpful, thx!

Good choice -- Gettysburg. Which character have you chosen?

Pretend to be somebody who lived during the event that you chose. Write down "your" experiences (that is, things that that person would have seen, heard, done, etc., but call the person "me," because you're pretending to be them).

how do i start writing it? sorry :/ @Ms. Sue
