  1. The one electron in the H atom is in the n = 1 shell in its ground state. It can be moved from the n = 1 shell to n = 2 or n = 3 or n= 4 etc by absorbing energy. Thus we can expose H atoms to energy and cause the electron to move to higher levels BUT not just any amount of energy will do. In order to move the electron from n = 1 to n = 2 it requires what I will call x amount of energy. If the energy we are using is too small nothing happens; i.e., there isn't enough energy to move the electron to n = 2 shell. But also nothing will happen if the energy is just slightly more than enough to move it to n = 2. The electron moves when just the right amount of energy, what I call a packet of energy, is absorbed. If that packet (a quantum of energy also called a photon of energy) is just right the electron moves to n = 2 or if it is just right it may move to n = 3 or n = 4 but nowhere in between. Quantized energy is energy in packets and atoms absorb energy in just the right size quantum. If the energy in the quantum is too large or too small to move the electron to a particular shell, the quantum just goes on and the atom is unaffected.
Here is a site that does a much better job of describing the process. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum
