A runner in a relay race is required to run a distance of 20 m, pick up tbaton, and then turn back to the start. the runner must then run back past the starting point to a location 10 m beyond start, pick up a second baton, turn around and run past start again to a second runner located a distance of 30 m from the start.

a) What total distance does the runner travel?

b) at the end of the relay, what is the overall displacement of the runner form the start?

  1. east 20
    then west 30
    then east 40

    total run = 20 + 30 + 40
    use for a

    total east = 20 - 30 + 40
    use for b
