Flamenco can be further divided into four more categories; Flamenco singers, Flamenco dancers, Flamenco guitarists and Flamenco Bands.

Should there be something else in place of the semi-colon? What I mean is, is there something better I can put there. I`m not quite sure when a semi-colon is used in a sentance but I felt as though a comma didn't quite work so I place a semi-colon. If i`m wrong could you please correct me.

You may use either a colon or a dash. When you are going to make a list, a colon is exactly right.

Thanks so much GuruBlue

I have another question.

Should I use

:

or

;

Guru recommended you use a colon :

This is a semicolon ;

Oh O.K

Thanks Ms. Sue

May I ask when a semi-colon should be used?

This site gives an excellent description with examples of using a semicolon.

Thanks so much Ms. Sue.

I finally understand the purpose of semi-colons.

:-) Great!

In this case, a semi-colon is not the most appropriate punctuation mark to use. A semi-colon is typically used to separate two closely related independent clauses that could stand alone as separate sentences. Instead, you should use a colon (:) to introduce a list or a series of items.

So, the correct punctuation would be to use a colon after the word "categories" like this:

"Flamenco can be further divided into four more categories: Flamenco singers, Flamenco dancers, Flamenco guitarists, and Flamenco Bands."

By using a colon, you indicate that what follows is a list of items that further explain or define the categories.
