The Pollution Problem
Roberto Bererra

1Unfortunately, pollution is like air: it’s everywhere! Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into the environment that can cause damage and harm to humans, animals, and the environment. It takes on a number of different forms, from chemicals and garbage to something as seemingly innocent as light or noise.

2Pollution comes from a variety of sources. In addition, it alters, changes, and even destroys a variety of places. For example, exhaust from cars pollutes the air. When it rains, runoff from fertilizers and pesticides, which farmers use to help crops grow, can pollute the water in oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams. Garbage dumped in landfills is not only an eyesore, but also a source of harmful gases that can damage the earth’s atmosphere. Light pollution, which comes in the form of bright streetlights or signs, disrupts the view of the night sky. Noise pollution caused by cars, trucks, and machines interrupts the natural sounds of the world around us, such as birds singing or leaves rustling.

3The types of pollution and their effects vary greatly. At the same time, however, they are related; each type of pollution affects the other types. An example of the connection between different types of pollution is acid rain. Acid rain is caused mostly by sulfur or nitrogen emissions given off by sources such as car exhaust and the burning of fossil fuels such as coal. These harmful chemicals rise into the atmosphere where they react with other compounds and then fall as an acidic form of rain, sleet, or snow. Acid rain damages plants and buildings, contaminates soil and water, and has a negative effect on animals, fish, and even humans.

4Pollution has other effects, too. Breathing toxic air or drinking polluted water can cause humans and animals to develop health problems that can be serious and sometimes deadly. The deaths of too many members of a certain species of animal can upset the local ecosystem, or the area in which they live. As a result, weather patterns and climates can also change.

5Though pollution is everywhere, there are ways to help prevent it. By walking or riding bikes—instead of driving cars—people can help decrease air pollution. People can also buy and eat organic foods to support farmers that do not use fertilizers on their crops. It is also a good idea to take old things that people intend to throw away and find new ways to use them. A great way to help the environment is to recycle. Save items like used paper, glass and plastic bottles, and metal cans. Then, take them to a recycling center where they can be turned into new products to be used again. Some cities and towns even have recycling programs in place so all you have to do is leave your recyclable items on the curb on a certain day each week. It doesn’t get much easier to help the environment and reduce pollution than that!
In paragraph 3, what point is the author making when he talks about acid rain?

Don’t Feed the Animals!
L. Han

Thousands of families travel to see the natural wonders of our national parks each year. If you visit one, you may see cute animals such as raccoons that you may want to feed. Please resist this urge, as feeding wild animals can cause all kinds of harm.

For one thing, feeding animals can hurt the ecosystem. For example, ground squirrels like to eat pine seeds. They gather and store them for the winter months. The seeds they don’t eat will grow into pine trees. If these same squirrels are fed by tourists, they will not bury seeds for the winter. The result will be fewer trees!

In addition, feeding the animals can make them sick. They will also begin to lose their wildness. This happens when the animals get used to being around humans and their vehicles, and it puts the animals in danger. Animals are often harmed when they spend time near the roads in the park.

Being in such open areas also makes them easier prey for other animals. Property can also be damaged by animals. Finally, humans can be harmed by animals who accept their food. For these reasons and many more, it’s best to admire wild animals from afar, and let them find their own meals.

Save Our Library
L. Hernandez

Dear City Council Members:

Due to the fact that the library tax measure did not pass in last week’s election, I know there is not enough money to keep all of the city’s libraries open. I read in the paper last night that Hillside is one of the branches you might close, and I am writing to ask you not to do this.

Hillside needs its library. There are no other libraries within five miles. That might not sound like much, but people here are poor, and many do not have cars. In addition, the bus that goes downtown only runs twice a day. All this means that it would be very difficult for those who live in the Hillside neighborhood to use another library. Over 700 people a week walk through those doors. If the library closes, where will they go for books?

The library, of course, provides much more than books. It is a place people can go to get information and use the computers. In Hillside, only one in four people has a computer at home. In the rest of the city, three out of four people do. That means most people here do not have computers of their own. They count on using email and other programs on the library computers to keep in touch with their family and friends.

Hillside Library is a lifeline for us. Please do not take it away.
Sincerely,
Mona Wilkins

Supermarkets are full of choices, and some of them can be confusing. One example is whether to buy farmed fish or wild. It's worth taking the time to consider the pros and cons before making a selection.

After much research, I can tell you that I will choose wild fish whenever I can get it. Here is why. Although fish that come from farms are almost always cheaper, they pose a higher risk to our health. Imagine fish swimming around in tanks instead of in open waters. If one farmed fish gets sick, all the fish in the tank will as well. Farmed fish are also fed pellets made from processed smaller fish. These smaller fish often come from polluted waters. The farmed fish eat these polluted pellets, and then we eat the polluted farmed fish! Finally, wild fish just taste better than farmed. Fortunately, there are plenty of wild fish varieties to choose from.

Which of the author's claims about wild and farmed fish are supported by reasons and/or evidence?
