Julie subscribes to a sports magazine and a fashion magazine. She received 24 issues this year. The number of fashion issues is 6 less than twice the number of sports issues. Define the variables, and write a system of equations to find the number of issues of each magazine.

• Algebra 1 -

f = 2s + 6

s + f = 24

Substitute 2s+6 for s in second equation and solve for s. Insert that value into the first equation and solve for f. Check by inserting both values into the second equation.

• Algebra 1 -

6=s
18=f

• Algebra 1 -

f=14
s=10

• Algebra 1 -

s + f = 24

f = 2s + 6

substitute 2s + 6 in for f, so the equation will read s + 2s + 6 = 24. solve for s.
next, take the value of s and put it in for s in the problem f = 2s + 6.
check your answers by substituting the s and f values in the second equation.
