would a graph model this problem situation?

algebra 1
Reiny
Here is a graph of the situation.

The way it is stated the equation makes little sense to me.
Is x the time relative to Sept 21 ?
Is 40<*<40 supposed to mean
40 < x <40 ?
that is, are you going forward and backwards from Sept 1 only 40 days?
Yes, a graph would show the problem situation.

what are the domain and range of the part of the function that is graphed previously?

algebra 1
nicki
What is the meaning of the point x=40 on the graph? Explain.

algebra 1
Reiny
The domain is 40 < x<40
which I interpret at 40 days before Sept 21 and 40 days after Sept 21
(you do the counting)
the range would be ....
well if x = 40
y = .05(40) + 12 = 2+12 = 14
and if x = +40
y = .05(40)+12 = 2+12 = 10
The numbers 14 and 10 would be the number of daylight hours 40 days prior to Sept 21 (in the summer) and 10 would be the number of daylight hours 40 days after Sept 21 (in winter)
algebra 1
malik
so the range is 10?

algebra 1
Reiny
10 ????
How much spread is there between 10 and 14 ??
So , are you malik or nicki?
don't switch names.
