In what situations would you use the mean to summarize a set of data? The median?
The mean or median can be used with a normal distribution.
However, since the mean acts as a fulcrum (balance point) and is most influenced by deviant scores, the median is best to use with a skewed distribution (pulled out with extreme scores to one side).
