8  5y = 12  9y
i got:
812 5y = 1212  9y
20  5y = 9y
20 +20  5y  9y
im so stuck idont understand this one can you please help me

8  5y = 12  9y
5y + 9y = 12 + 8
4y = 20
y = 5

825 = 12  45
33 = 33 true

You seem to be forgetting that multiplying two negative numbers produces a positive number. Watch your signs! 
wait i think i got it:
8  3p 12 = 2p
12 + 8 = 20
20  3p = 2p
+3p = +3p
20 = 5p

4 = p is that right
