a ship sails 27km due south then 16km due west. How far is the ship to the nearest 0.1 km ,from its starting point?

    Use the Pythagorean theorem to find the hypotenuse of this right-angle triangle.

    a^2 + b^2 = c^2

    27^2 + 16^2 = c^2

    729 + 256 = c^2

    985 = c^2

    31.384 = 31.4 km = c
