I need your help to check the word choice in these sentences. Thank you.

1) George Orwell along with Ernest Hemingway were among the more famous (is "most" a mistake?) foreigners participating in the efforts against the fascists.
2. Many Spanish intellectuals and artists either were either killed or were forced into exile. (were exiled is a mistake?)
3) In the city there are a lot of bombed places. He always wears the blue overalls (a pair of blue overalls is also possible?) of the party. Eton was famous for its use of corporal punishment(s??), to which students were subjected, also in public ceremonies.
4)Other episodes that influenced his personality were, at first that he experienced poverty first end. Then, in 1936, he went to Catalonia to report on the Spanish Civil War and helped the Republicans fight against the Fascists.
