    Ok, so we have

    (3x^4 - 5x^2 - 6x + 5) + (-4x^3 + 6x^2 + 7x - 1)

add it up, collecting like powers:

    3x^4 - 4x^3 + (-5 + 6)x^2 + (-6 + 7)x + (5 + -1)
    = 3x^4 - 4x^3 + x^2 + x + 4
