A girl bought a card and then returned it. The second card cost $1.50 less than the first card. She got 75 cents in change. How much did the first card cost?

    Let x equal the cost of the first card.

    x - 1.5 = 0.75
    x = 0.75 + 1.5
    x = 2.25

    Does that make sense to you?
