when dealing with circuits, and you say

"the voltage across the battery" and "a current through the battery"

what do the words across and through mean.

The voltage is like pressure in a pipe, you measure pressure difference between two points along a pipe.

Current is like the water flowing through a pipe. A certain amount of water passes past a point per second.

In order to get the water to flow you need the pressure difference.

Any help?

i know what voltage and current mean. I want to know the difference between across and through.

If the function is potential like voltage across means measuring from one point to another by any old route.

Through means how much is passing along a path.

In the context of circuits, the terms "across" and "through" are used to describe the relationship between the different elements of the circuit.

When we say "the voltage across the battery," it means the potential difference between the two terminals of the battery. Voltage is a measure of the energy per unit of charge, and it indicates the electric potential difference between two points in a circuit. In this case, we are specifically referring to the potential difference between the positive and negative terminals of the battery.

On the other hand, when we mention "a current through the battery," it means the flow of electric charge within the battery. Current is the rate at which charge flows through a circuit, and it is typically measured in amperes (A). "Through" indicates that the electric current is entering or leaving the battery, usually from one terminal to another.

To measure the voltage across the battery, you need a voltmeter. Connect the two leads of the voltmeter across the terminals of the battery, ensuring that the positive lead corresponds to the positive terminal and the negative lead to the negative terminal. The voltmeter will display the voltage value across the battery.

To measure the current through the battery, you would need an ammeter. Disconnect the circuit at a point where the current flows through the battery, and then connect the ammeter in series with the battery, ensuring that the current flows through the ammeter. The ammeter will display the current value passing through the battery.
