what is the difference between Northeast and North of East or East of North. Same with Northwest, what's North of West or West of North??

are these other ways of saying North North East and East North East; North North West and West North West?

    Yes, I think you're right.

    For example, Northeast would be about half way between North and East. But North North East (or East of North) would be about half way between North and Northeast.

    Northeast and north of east are really the same thing but its more accurate for scientists to say north of east. For north of east, you start east and then rotate --- degrees north. For east of north, it the opposite, you start at north and then turn --- degrees east.
