~Quelqu'un _________ l'arrivée d'un train à travers le ___________ .

What words would fit into those spaces? Thanks

Thank you for using the Jiskha Homework Help Forum. First of all, what do you see? "Someone..........the arrival of a train across the. . . . . ." Probably the fill-ins are, since you are at the train station, waits for......platform. (attend & quai)

I'm pretty sure l'arrivee isn't the arrive but rather some form of direct object pronouns? and a travers is through and not across which is en travers.

Thank you for responding. I'm not sure I'd trust your dictionary.

l'arrivée = arrival; intake; (sports) finish, goal
à travers = across; through
en travers de = across

In the given sentence, the correct words to fill in the blanks are:

Quelqu'un attend l'arrivée d'un train à travers le quai.

Translation: Someone is waiting for the arrival of a train through the platform.

To arrive at this answer, we can break down the sentence and analyze the context:

1. The sentence starts with "Quelqu'un," which means "someone."
2. The sentence talks about the arrival of a train, so we need a verb related to waiting for the arrival. In this case, "attend" fits the meaning.
3. The word "l'arrivée" refers to "the arrival," which matches the context of the sentence.
4. The phrase "d'un train" means "of a train," specifying the object of the arrival.
5. The phrase "à travers" means "through" in this context, indicating the means by which the arrival is observed.
6. The word "le quai" translates to "the platform," specifying the location where the person is waiting for the train's arrival.

To find the correct words, it's helpful to use a reliable dictionary. The online dictionary provided (http://www.freedict.com/onldict/fre.html) could be useful for further reference.
