thank you to the perosn who answered about the accent marks, but i meant how do you chose how a word is accented, my vocabulary test have words that need to have the accent marks put on which syllable is pronounced stronger and i can never tell.

Accent marks show the syllable that is stressed or emphasized.

Dictionaries show the accented syllable with an apostrophe (').

I suggest you look up troublesome words in a dictionary and see which syllable is accented.

To determine where the accent is placed in a word, you can follow several guidelines:

1. Look up the word in a dictionary: Dictionaries often indicate the stressed syllable by placing an accent mark, typically an apostrophe ('), before or above the accented syllable.

2. Understand syllable rules: In general, there are a few rules to help you determine the stressed syllable:
a. If the word ends in a vowel, n, or s, the stress is usually on the penultimate (second-to-last) syllable. For example, "banana" (ba-NA-na).
b. If the word ends in a consonant other than n or s, the stress is usually on the final syllable. For example, "begin" (be-GIN).
c. Compound words, prefixes, and suffixes may have their own rules, so it's best to consult a dictionary for those.

3. Pay attention to word origins: Some words in English are borrowed from other languages, and the stress often remains in the original language's pronunciation. For example, "café" (ca-FE) is pronounced with stress on the final syllable as it is borrowed from French.

4. Listen to native speakers: When in doubt, listen to native speakers pronouncing words. They naturally emphasize the stressed syllables, which can give you a good indication of word stress patterns.

Remember, while these guidelines can be useful, English does not have strict rules for accent placement, so it's important to rely on dictionaries and native speakers for accurate pronunciations.
