The Dickey

by Audge Podge

"Are you going to play Silly Sal at the party tonight for Dad's work?" Pam asked Maddie, her sister.
"I think not. You saw what I got from Sadie MacIntyre last year. Are you?" asked Maddie.
"Yeah," answered Pam. "I bought a yummy box of chocolates. Whoever gets it should be happy."
"The party should be nice, and even though I'm not playing Silly Sal, the game is always fun to watch," said Maddie.
At the party, Maddie and Pam ate and mingled with the other kids. After a while, Mrs. MacDougall, Dad's boss, said, "Okay, everyone, let's play Silly Sal." All the kids gathered around the gifts that were piled on the table. "Everyone needs to draw a number from this hat. Traditionally, players open presents as soon as they pick them. However, let's make things more suspenseful by waiting until the end of the game to open the gifts. This will keep those who go last from having an unfair advantage.
When the game ended, Pam ripped into the paper, and her excited face quickly became confused. "What is it?" she quietly asked as she held up an oval cloth of yellow knitted yarn with a hole in the middle.
"I don't know," Maddie responded. "Let's ask Dad. He's right there by the dessert table."
"Dad, what's this?" asked Pam.
Chuckling softly, Dad answered, "This is called a dickey. It's a partial shirtfront. See, here's the neck hole.
"Why would anyone want a partial shirt?" asked Pam.
Unable to control himself any longer, Dad started laughing. Then, Maddie and Pam were soon in stitches as well.
