The Roman Republic had a republican form of government, where power was held by elected officials and representatives, rather than a monarch. The government was comprised of a Senate, which was made up of Roman nobles, and two consuls who were elected annually to serve as the heads of state. The Roman Republic also had a system of checks and balances to prevent any one individual or group from gaining too much power.
