Lesson Title: Exploring Map Skills and the Map of South Africa

Grade Level: 4

Objective:
- Students will be able to identify and use key map skills such as cardinal directions, map scale, and symbols.
- Students will be able to locate and identify key features on the map of South Africa.

Materials:
- Map of South Africa
- Compass
- Ruler
- Map key or legend

Warm-Up (10 minutes):
- Begin by discussing with students the importance of maps and how they are used in everyday life.
- Show students the map of South Africa and ask if they have ever looked at or used a map before.
- Review cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) and how they are used on a map.

Main Activity (30 minutes):
1. Review the key map skills with students: cardinal directions, map scale, and symbols.
2. Have students practice using a compass to determine cardinal directions on the map.
3. Discuss the importance of map scale and how it helps determine distances on a map.
4. Show students the map key or legend and explain how to use it to interpret symbols on the map.
5. Have students identify and locate key features on the map of South Africa such as major cities, bodies of water, and bordering countries.

Closure (10 minutes):
- Have students reflect on what they have learned about map skills and the map of South Africa.
- Ask students to share one interesting fact they learned about South Africa from the map.
- Encourage students to continue practicing their map skills at home or in other social studies lessons.
