Writing the TDA Essay

1. Read the The Swallow and the Pumpkinseed : A Korean Folk Tale

2. Think about how the brothers’ values are different. Make notes!

3. Think about how these values affect their actions, which affect the outcome of the story. Make notes!

4. Decide what lesson is being taught in the folk tale. How does this lesson help you identify a theme? (Review theme here.)

5. Review the scoring rubric so you know what the requirements are.

6. Write your thesis statement FIRST. Review the resource called Framework for Trying Out a Thesis Statement.

7. Start drafting your TDA essay. Refer to the sample essay to help you.

8. Use the TDA checklist for scoring to evaluate your work and make sure you’ve met all requirements. Ask your Learning Coach (LC) to read your essay and give you feedback based on the rubric.

9. Revise your TDA based on the feedback from your LC.

10. Edit your essay for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors.

11. Make sure each paragraph is focused and supports your thesis statement.

12. Make sure you have cited evidence from the text to support your analysis.

13. Make sure your conclusion ties back to your thesis statement and summarizes your main points.

14. Review the rubric again to make sure you have met all the requirements for scoring.

15. Submit your final TDA essay for evaluation.

16. Reflect on your writing process and what you have learned from completing this literary analysis.

17. Discuss any areas of improvement with your LC for future writing assignments.

18. Celebrate your hard work and completion of a successful TDA essay!
