Helpless

A. Gautam

Because I could not help my friend
All night I slept badly
He’d wanted just some extra cash
But I was broke, you see

5 No piggy bank, no birthday cash
And I had spent away
Allowance and loose pennies too
Before the week was through

I passed his desk, he looked as sad
10 as an airless balloon
I passed the bench, where at recess
He seemed to shrink some more

Why did he even need money?
Why did he ask from Me?
15 We seemed to hardly ever speak
Now is he mad at me?
