When thermal energy is applied to ice, the ice temperatures rises into 0°C then stays the same for a period of time and wanted two sentences. Explain why this takes place.
This phenomenon occurs because the thermal energy is being used to break the intermolecular forces between the water molecules in the ice, rather than increasing the temperature. Once all the ice has melted, the thermal energy can then be used to increase the temperature of the liquid water.
