In 1908, Ernest Rutherford took apart Thomson’s theory while working on a different experiment with gold foil. In this experiment, Rutherford fired a stream of tiny positively charged bullets through a thin sheet of gold foil. He observed that most of the bullets passed through the foil directly without changing direction. Some of the bullets, however, did not go through but instead bounced back from the gold sheet as if they had been repelled.
