Thesis: The domestic United States underwent significant changes during the Second World War from 1939 to 1945, including shifts in the economy, society, and government that had lasting effects on the nation.
Contextualization: The outbreak of World War II in 1939 had a profound impact on the United States, as the nation shifted from a largely isolationist stance to becoming actively involved in the conflict following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. As millions of men went off to fight overseas, industries mobilized for war production, women entered the workforce in unprecedented numbers, and government intervention increased to support the war effort. These changes transformed the nation's economy, society, and government in ways that would shape the postwar era.

The Japanese bombed our neighborhood and the house next door was hit by falling antiaircraft fire. My father went to his destroyer while my mother and I went up to Admiral Chew's house in the hills behind Honolulu where I was assigned to keep an eye on the sand buckets in the attic while the adults discussed the situation downstairs. In the end I had to drop my first year of school at Punahoe and my mother and I flew to San Francisco on the float plane "China Clipper" in January 1942. My mother had my sister just after the plane landed and we found a house in La Jolla. In November my father died on the bridge of the cruiser San Francisco off Guadalcanal and my mother, sister, and I moved to Massachusetts to live with my grandmother. Toward the end of the war my mother married my step father who was also a naval officer. We were in a cottage on Cape Cod when the war ended and we all went to church before celebrating in the streets.
The United States was by far the strongest and richest country in the world after the war ended. Everyone looked to us for help, even the Japanese, Germans, and Italians.
