At the Olympics, the winner of the gold, silver and bronze medals stand on a tiered pedestal. Assuming each pedestal is of equal what’s in depth find the total surface area of the stand. Stand one has a length of 20 a height of 11 and a width of 20 stand two has a height of 15 and a length of 20 and a width of 20 stand three has a length of 20 height of seven and width of 20.

To find the surface area of each stand, we will use the formula for the surface area of a rectangular prism: SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh.

Stand 1:
Surface area (SA1) = 2(20)(20) + 2(20)(11) + 2(11)(20)
SA1 = 800 + 440 + 440
SA1 = 1680 square units

Stand 2:
Surface area (SA2) = 2(20)(20) + 2(20)(15) + 2(15)(20)
SA2 = 800 + 600 + 600
SA2 = 2000 square units

Stand 3:
Surface area (SA3) = 2(20)(20) + 2(20)(7) + 2(7)(20)
SA3 = 800 + 280 + 280
SA3 = 1360 square units

The total surface area of the stand is the sum of the surface areas of the three individual stands:

Total surface area = SA1 + SA2 + SA3
Total surface area = 1680 + 2000 + 1360
Total surface area = 5040 square units
