Calculate the formal concentration (in molarity) of a LiCl solution if 17.0g of LiCl is dissolved in 500.0mL of water.

Note: You can't calculate the molarity of this problem. Molarity = mols/L of SOLUTION. You have 500 mL of H2O as the solvent but when you add LiCl to it the SOLUTION VOLUME will be more than 500 mL. Perhaps not much but by some anyway. Assuming you meant "to form 500 mL of solution" here is how you would work it.

Li = 6.9; Cl = 35.5; therefore, LiCl = 42.4 for the molar mass.
mols LiCl = g/molar mass = 17.0/42.4 = 0.4
M = mols/L = 0.4 moles/0.5 L of solution = ? M
