Glaciers of the past and present have had effects on the environment. They are both long-term and short-term. Here are some of the effects on plants and animals.
- Most of the plants were all ready there
- A lot of animals have died since then including: mammoths, mastodons, saber-toothed tigers, giant ground sloth, and many more
- As ice advanced, animals were forced to move farther south
- Scientists know that early man live in Europe during part of the ice age
Here are some effects from the ice sheets
- As they moved south they scraped up rocks and stones and carried them.
- Ice sheets ground off the tops of hills
- They cut valleys deeper
- Where ice sheets melted, animals came back to live
- Left bare bedrock
- When ice melted it turned into water, which ran off in the form of streams
- Some water remained and became lakes
- In some places lakes dried up and became beds that collected silt
- The Great Salt Lake was also formed during the ice age
- Grass grown where ice had been
- Changed sea level
