Homework Help: Science: Earth: Glaciers

by Ursula B., Tiffany C., DeAnna D., and Erin S.

Glaciers of the past and present have had effects on the environment. They are both long-term and short-term. Here are some of the effects on plants and animals.

  • Most of the plants were all ready there
  • A lot of animals have died since then including: mammoths, mastodons, saber-toothed tigers, giant ground sloth, and many more
  • As ice advanced, animals were forced to move farther south
  • Scientists know that early man live in Europe during part of the ice age

Here are some effects from the ice sheets

  • As they moved south they scraped up rocks and stones and carried them.
  • Ice sheets ground off the tops of hills
  • They cut valleys deeper
  • Where ice sheets melted, animals came back to live
  • Left bare bedrock
  • When ice melted it turned into water, which ran off in the form of streams
  • Some water remained and became lakes
  • In some places lakes dried up and became beds that collected silt
  • The Great Salt Lake was also formed during the ice age
  • Grass grown where ice had been
  • Changed sea level
