estimate by rounding the fractions

a. 7 8/9* 5 1/13
b. 34 9/10 divided by 4 9/10
c. 14 19/39 divided by 19/39

I'll do the first one:

8 * 5 = 40

I'll be glad to check your answers for the others.

thank you ms. sue

so would the other ones be 35*5
and 15*20?

thank you ms. sue

so would the other ones be 35*5
and 15*20? sorry i mean divided by

The second is correct. 35/5

The third one isn't 15 and 20.

Is 14 19/39 closer to 15?

Look more carefully at 19/39

i have a hard time with fractions. would i divide 19/39 to get .48 and round up to get .50 which would be 14 and .50 to go up to 15 and say 15/.5? thanks for your help.

You're on the right track.

However, 19/39 is still less than half.

I'd round one of these fractions up and the other down to get -- 14/1 = 14

To estimate by rounding the fractions, follow these steps:

a. 7 8/9 * 5 1/13:
1. Convert the mixed numbers into improper fractions:
7 8/9 = (7 * 9 + 8) / 9 = 71/9
5 1/13 = (5 * 13 + 1) / 13 = 66/13
2. Multiply the fractions: (71/9) * (66/13) = (71 * 66) / (9 * 13) = 4686/117.
3. To estimate, round the fractions to the nearest whole number:
4686 rounds to 4700
117 rounds to 100
4. Calculate the estimated answer: 4700/100 = 47

Therefore, the estimated answer to a is 47.

b. 34 9/10 divided by 4 9/10:
1. Convert the mixed numbers into improper fractions:
34 9/10 = (34 * 10 + 9) / 10 = 349/10
4 9/10 = (4 * 10 + 9) / 10 = 49/10
2. Divide the fractions: (349/10) ÷ (49/10) = (349/10) * (10/49) = 349/49.
3. To estimate, round the fractions to the nearest whole number:
349 rounds to 350
49 rounds to 50
4. Calculate the estimated answer: 350/50 = 7

Therefore, the estimated answer to b is 7.

c. 14 19/39 divided by 19/39:
1. Convert the mixed number into an improper fraction:
14 19/39 = (14 * 39 + 19) / 39 = 575/39
2. Divide the fractions: (575/39) ÷ (19/39) = (575/39) * (39/19) = 575/19.
3. To estimate, round the fraction to the nearest whole number:
575 rounds to 600
19 rounds to 20
4. Calculate the estimated answer: 600/20 = 30

Therefore, the estimated answer to c is 30.
