What muscles do horse use to inhale?

Horses primarily use their diaphragm and external intercostal muscles to inhale. The diaphragm is the main muscle responsible for the act of breathing in, as it contracts and moves downward, while the external intercostal muscles between the ribs also help to expand the chest cavity and increase lung volume during inhalation. Additionally, other accessory muscles in the neck and chest may also be recruited to assist with breathing in horses.
