What happened during the Mai Lai Massacre?

During the Mai Lai Massacre on March 16, 1968, US Army soldiers from Charlie Company, under the command of Lieutenant William Calley Jr., killed between 347 and 504 unarmed South Vietnamese civilians, including men, women, children, and elderly people, in the village of Mai Lai. The soldiers also women and girls, mutilated bodies, and burned down homes. The massacre was one of the most shocking atrocities committed by US forces during the Vietnam War and sparked outrage and condemnation both in the United States and around the world.
