The portfolio in Unit 13, Lesson 1, asks you to write a literary analysis essay about the book you read for Novel study. The assignment and an essay outline are in the left-hand column below. You may choose to complete the essay, or you may do an alternative assignment. You only need to select ONE. All of the alternative assignments are listed in the right-hand column below. All assignments will be graded on the same scale, so choose the one that you like best. No matter which project you choose, submit it in the Unit 13, Lesson 1 Dropbox.

Literary Analysis Essay Assignment:

Essay Topic: Choose one theme from the novel you read for Novel study and discuss how it is developed throughout the book. Provide specific examples from the text to support your analysis.

Essay Outline:

I. Introduction
A. Introduce the novel and its author
B. Introduce the theme you will be analyzing
C. Provide a thesis statement that outlines how the theme is developed in the novel

II. Body Paragraphs
A. Discuss specific examples from the text that illustrate the theme
B. Analyze how the author uses literary devices, characters, and plot points to develop the theme
C. Provide commentary on the significance of the theme and its impact on the story

III. Conclusion
A. Summarize the main points of your analysis
B. Discuss the overall importance of the theme in the novel
C. End with a closing thought or reflection on the novel as a whole

Alternative Assignments:

1. Create a visual representation of a key scene from the novel (such as a painting, collage, or diorama) and write a brief explanation of why you chose that scene and how it represents the overall themes of the book.

2. Write a letter from one character to another character in the novel, discussing a key event that occurred and its impact on their relationship. Use quotes and specific examples from the text to support your interpretation.

3. Design a new book cover for the novel, incorporating key symbols and themes from the story. Write a paragraph explaining your design choices and how they relate to the novel as a whole.
