The nineteenth century Anglo American and black cowboys adopted their style from the Mexican vaqueros. Vaqueros were skilled horsemen and cattle herders from Mexico who were hired by ranchers in the southwestern United States to work on their ranches. The vaqueros' traditional attire and methods of livestock management greatly influenced the cowboy culture in the American West.
