Isaac Stevens had a paternalistic attitude towards Native American land rights in the Pacific Northwest. He believed in the superiority of White civilization and saw Native Americans as obstacles to progress and development. Stevens sought to acquire Native American land through treaties and reservations in order to make way for white settlers.
