Ferdinand Magellan's major accomplishment was leading the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. Magellan's expedition began in 1519 and lasted until 1522 when his surviving crew completed the circumnavigation. Magellan himself did not survive the entire journey, as he was killed in the Philippines in 1521.
