Creoles were individuals of Spanish descent who were born in the New World, while peninsulares were individuals who were born in Spain and held the highest social and political status in the Spanish colonies. Peninsulares held more power and privilege than the Creoles, as they were considered to be more "pure" Spaniards. This distinction created social tensions and often led to conflicts between the two groups.
