Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels developed the theory of communism in which they argued that the working class, or proletariat, would eventually rise up and overthrow the capitalist business owners, or bourgeoisie, leading to a classless society where the means of production are owned collectively. This theory is known as Marxism and formed the basis of the Communist movement.
