When I read selections by Djebar, Rifaat, al-Idlibi, and Ayyoub, I learned that women had roles which were often restricted by societal norms and expectations. For example, in the selection "Women of Algiers in their Apartment" by Assia Djebar, the character of Zohra faced the problem of being trapped in a loveless marriage. She reacted by seeking solace in her relationships with other women in the apartment building (p. 45). In addition, in the selection "Distant View of a Minaret" by Alifa Rifaat, the character of the unnamed protagonist faced the problem of feeling trapped in a loveless marriage and unfulfilled as a woman. She reacted by seeking pleasure and fulfillment through a secret affair (p. 87). Therefore, it is shown that these women coped with conflict by seeking connections with other women and seeking their own sources of pleasure and fulfillment outside of societal expectations.
