2.1 Study Location

The Ramu Ni0Co Mine is located in the Madang Province along the North Coast of PNG.
The mining activities are carried out on two different locations for its core industrial
processes. Kurumbukari is the site of ore mining and beneficiation and it is situated at the
Foothills of Bismarck Range, approximately 75km South0West inland from the town of
Madang the provincial capital. A series of open0cut mine pits and a beneficiation plant to
produce ore slurry are located here. A slurry pipeline approximately 134km long is
constructed to transport the ore slurry from the Kurumbukari mine site south0eastwards to the
refinery plant at Basamuk Bay (Astrolabe Bay) in Rai Coast for processing. The refinery is
made up of a high pressure acid leaching facility to produce high grade intermediate
hydroxides of Nickel and Cobalt metals. An acid plant, a lime plant, a power station, a wharf,
a limestone quarry and an accommodation area are also integral components of the Basamuk
refinery complex. A DSTP facility at the Basamuk Bay is used for disposal of tailings into
the ocean at a depth of 150m. The tailing materials, aided by a turbidity plume at the terminal
point are eventually dumped at the abyssal system of the Bismarck Sea. Location of Study Site.
