Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was a medieval emperor who ruled over much of Western Europe from 768 to 814. He was the King of the Franks and later became the first Holy Roman Emperor. Charlemagne is known for his military conquests, his promotion of education and culture, and his support for the Christian church. He established a strong centralized government, reformed the legal system, and promoted the arts and education. Charlemagne is considered one of the most important figures in European history and is often referred to as the "Father of Europe."
