90% of the energy on an energy pyramid is lost as heat when it is transferred from one trophic level to the next. This is due to inefficiencies in energy transfer processes, such as respiration and metabolism, as well as energy being used for growth, movement, and reproduction. Only around 10% of the energy is passed on to the next trophic level, resulting in a decrease in available energy as you move up the pyramid.
