The witch trials resulted in the deaths of numerous innocent individuals, including Proctor himself(Insert text evidence from the crucible of what John Proctor could have done to end the hysteria in Salem

One piece of text evidence from The Crucible is when John Proctor is urged by Reverend Hale to confess to witchcraft in order to save himself and end the hysteria in Salem. Proctor responds by saying, "I have confessed myself! Is there no good penance but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are! It is enough!" (Act IV). This demonstrates Proctor's refusal to falsely confess to something he did not do in order to save himself, even if it means risking his own life and perpetuating the hysteria.
