One of the darker actions examined in a story is the murder of Duncan in William Shakespeare's play "Macbeth." The character Macbeth is prompted to commit this heinous act out of ambition and the desire for power. If Macbeth were able to overcome this darker impulse and instead follow a higher intention such as loyalty and righteousness, the story would have taken a completely different turn. Macbeth could have remained loyal to King Duncan and served him faithfully, leading a life free of guilt, regret, and the tragic consequences that ultimately befall him. By choosing a path of virtue over ambition, Macbeth could have avoided the downfall that consumes him in the play.
