There are significantly less individual organisms at level 5 compared to level 1 because of the loss of energy as it flows up the food chain. As energy is transferred from producers (level 1) to primary consumers (level 2) and so on, energy is lost through heat and waste, resulting in a smaller number of organisms at higher trophic levels like level 5.
