In the play, the protagonist, Macbeth, is driven by his ambition and desire for power to murder King Duncan in order to become the King of Scotland. His intentions are driven by his own selfish desires for power and status, as well as the manipulation of his wife, Lady Macbeth.
If Macbeth were able to overcome his darker impulse and indulge a higher intention, the story would drastically change. Instead of descending into madness and committing more murders in order to secure his rule, Macbeth could have chosen to act with integrity and honor. He could have supported King Duncan's reign and worked towards a peaceful and prosperous Scotland. By choosing a higher intention, Macbeth would have avoided the guilt, paranoia, and ultimate downfall that he faces in the play. Ultimately, Macbeth's tragic fate could have been avoided if he had been able to overcome his darker impulses and embrace a higher moral code.
